Foursquare gets major update with all-new UI for iPhone

The popular social networking-meets-geo tagging app Foursquare has received a major update today.  The new version 5.0 is available in the App Store now and brings a completely rethought and reengineered User Interface.  On the surface, it looks like the new UI is the only major change over the previous version but there is an underlying theme going on with the app now that, while there before, is a bit clearer.

Ultimately Foursquare is about going out in the world and exploring with you indicating your location with a “check-in”.  This principle hasn’t changed with this update but exploring is really a key driver for the app.  Within the app there is the Explore tab which shows you a map which has popular locations in your area based on other Foursquare check-ins or has Foursquare Explore Tabspecials from retailers in the area.  This can be a particularly handy feature if you are somewhere that you do not know well and are looking for a coffee shop or a place to eat.

Make no mistake that Foursquare is still all about the check in.  That is the user data pool that Foursquare uses so it is still the #1 point and purpose of the app.  The revamped exploring however makes those check-ins a little more fun.

The new Foursquare app is a free download and is available now in the App Store.  It is still an iPhone-only build which is a bit disappointing given the 3G/4G and WiFi capabilities of the iPad.  It would be great to see an iPad specific version in the future.  Still, this new 5.0 version renders much better on the iPad and is far easier to read & navigate.

New Trip Photos iOS App Enhances How Users Capture, Tag N Share Photos

Tekton Technologies (P) Ltd., is excited to announce the release of their brand new app – Trip Photos – Tag, Search N Share. For a limited time only, users can experience the power of this amazing app for half price. Trip Photos allows iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users to completely revolutionize the way they use photos and videos. Since the release of the iPhone, it has been widely acknowledged that the base functionality does not offer a great solution for easily organizing, tagging and searching for your media. It can be quite cumbersome to scroll through your Camera Roll looking for a particular photo or video to share with your friends. On the contrary, Trip Photos is designed to be an all-sufficient app for capturing, tagging, searching and sharing your photos and videos. Stop spending hours trying to organize your photo library.

Trip Photos offers a variety of ways to capture images. Users can access the camera function by clicking the camera icon which is conveniently located in the top right corner of the app. From here, users can select camera preferences such as front/rear facing lens and whether to add flash or not. Trip Photos takes it to the next level by adding customized capture options. The user is given the choice of taking their photo in one of four capture modes (Normal, Anti Shake, Timer or Trip PhotosBurst). Anti Shake allows for the user to take highly detailed photos by ensuring movement of the camera is minimized. This allows for much crisper, sharper images.

Time mode allows for you to set a delay on how quick an image is taken. This is ideal for group photos, self portraits and more. This option provides more than enough time to setup your phone and get into the perfect pose! Perhaps the most entertaining option is Burst. This option allows users to take multiple photos by repeatedly pressing the camera icon. It is perfect for capturing multiple shots in a relatively short amount of time. Burst mode alleviates the wait time between each photo because the images are stored directly to your Trip Photos app – Not your Camera Roll. In addition, users also have the option to record video from within the app by simply toggling between video and image capture modes.

Taking photos and videos is only one function of this app. Trip Photos also offers the ability to tag each of your photos and add notes. This is useful when helping to store additional context around each item. One of the coolest and most useful features of the app is its impressive search capability. Users can search for photos and/or videos by location, notes, tags and date. This comes incredibly helpful when attempting to locate a particular photo or video you want to share with your friends. Are you having trouble remembering where a photo was taken, but you do happen to recall when it was taken? No problem! Open the in-app calendar and find your photo within seconds. Or perhaps you know where a photo was taken, but can’t remember exactly when. Users can view a map which depicts where each and every photo/video has been captured.

With an app as powerful as Trip Photos, it is important to have the ability to protect your data. Trip Photos offers the ability to mark trips (or albums) as private. This ensures that the content is only viewable and accessible to the owner. On the other hand, Trip Photos offers great sharing options for users to distribute content as they desire. Trip Photos is integrated with Facebook and Picasa. Uploading content to either of these channels is a breeze since it happens in the background without interfering with current tasks.

And to top it all off, the app offers a highly accurate weather component. When users tap the top center of the screen from anywhere in the application, a dropdown screen appears which presents data based on location. This function is perfect for multitasking since users don’t have to leave the app in order to see the time, temperature and weather forecast.

* Capture, Store and Organize photos by trip
