ABBYY, a leading provider of document recognition, data capture and linguistic technologies, today announced the availability of ABBYY PhraseBooks for iOS, an application that helps travelers communicate in 6 languages including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian. It also allows them to quickly learn most common phrases for various occasions and feel at home when abroad and offline.

PhraseBooks for iOS offers an up-to-date language content grouped by ABBYY’s lexicographers into 11 topics, most vital for traveling. Each has a special Useful Words subgroup containing most popular words and phrases on the subject. All

phrases are voiced by native speakers and illustrated with descriptive, humorous visuals from the ABBYY designer team. Additionally, from within PhraseBooks users can send their own suggestions for ABBYY developers about new phrases or languages they find worthy of being included in the application.

“ABBYY PhraseBooks is there to help when you have to explain your needs or thoughts in a language you can’t speak freely”, explained Katya Solntseva, Director of Mobile Products Department at ABBYY. “Special exercises will also help you memorize useful everyday phrases while traveling or preparing for a trip abroad.”

To learn new words or collocations, a user adds them to the Learning list and runs the exercise they like the most. The Remember Translation exercise displays a learning card with an illustrated foreign phrase to be translated into user’s mother language, while in the “Remember audibly” exercise a phrase is voiced over. Statistical data, available in the end of each task, indicates one’s personal progress.

ABBYY PhraseBooks for iOS is $9.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies) and available worldwide through the App Store in the Travel category. It is available under the localized titles, including ABBYY Frasari, ABBYY Sprachfuhrer and ABBYY Guides de conversation. Supported interface languages include English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Russian.

SeatGuru for iPhone Update Brings Improved Seat Details

As a frequent business and pleasure flyer, I have an army of apps on my iPhone to help me through the process of getting a flight, a ticket and getting to my destination.  One of those apps is SeatGuru and TripAdvisor – who own SeatGuru – have just released a nice update to the app which is available for free in the App Store.

The update, version 2.0 for those keeping score, brings significant improvements to the image quality of seating arrangements of hundreds of airlines and aircraft.  In the old version it was very much pixelised and in a rush (translation:

SeatGuru for iPhone

SeatGuru for iPhone

working your way from one gate to another to catch your connection flight) was difficult to read.  That is not the case with this update.  Images are crisp and clear, taking full advantage of the iPhone 5′s extra screen real estate if you have one.  In all there are over 350 image updates in this release, all of which are designed to help you understand the seating arrangement of an aircraft and the advantages or disadvantages of a particular seat.

This release also has Facebook integration so flyers can post photos from aircraft and seats to give you an even more realistic view of a seat assignment or aircraft.  When you sign in to SeatGuru with your Facebook account you can also post reviews of seats or aircraft.

In all there are 20 airlines that have been updated in SeatGuru including American Airlines, British Airways, Frontier, United, US Airways, JetBlue, Lufthansa, Air France, KLM and Air Canada to name a few.  Be sure to check out the release notes in the App Store to see the full list.

SeatGuru is a free app and is available in the App Store.  It is designed for iPhone – sadly no iPad interface just yet.

American Airlines updates iOS App with Passbook support

American Airlines has released an update to arguably one of the best airline apps for iPhone and iPad users.  The update comes on the heels of the branding of American Airlines this week with all new livery.  American did a great job of quickly updating their iOS universal app to reflect not only the new icon of the airline but brought new features to their app at the same time.

With the update, iPhone users of the American Airlines app will have the ability to show their AAdvantage status card in Passbook.  AAdvantage is American’s Frequent Flyer program.  The app already supported boarding passes in Passbook

but now you can display your AAdvantage status for quicker access to the Admirals Club if you have a membership.

All of the features from before are still in the app including being able to book flights, check flight status, get airport information and of course check your AAdvantage status all from within the app.  Having used several other airline apps in the past, I personally believe that American Airlines has one of the best (especially when you compare it to the really sad app that British Airways has made available :-\ )

The American Airlines app is a universal app so one download brings it to both your iPhone and iPad.  The app itself is free but if you will need to join the AAdvantage program to gain access to the Passbook features now in the app as well as make reservations through the app.

For more information about the American Airlines AAdvantage program, visit the AAdvantage website.

American Airlines update brings improved Passbook and iPad support

American Airlines may be in financial straits but their iOS development keeps on working.  The airline has released a significant update to their Universal iOS app with some nice improvements and feature enhancements along with a shiny new icon.

The update, version 2.0 for those keeping score, brings a completely new look to the iPad version of the app and it fully supports screen rotations from portrait to landscape.  In previous versions this rotation worked… kinda.

The other big improvement is for iPhone users.  Now your boarding time, not just your departure time, appear on your electronic ticket in Passbook.  This will give you the time that you need to be at the gate without having to go into the actual app itself.

There are other minor enhancements and improvements to the app and American has even thrown in an offline trivia game that can be played on the iPad while you are in flight.

The American Airlines app is free.  Registration into the AAdvantage Frequent Flyer program is required for some features which is also free.

Byways Icon

How the iPad Saved The Magazine Byways

You know the story. A struggling publication creates its own App, submits it to Apple’s iTunes Store, gets accepted, receives some free publicity, consumers read it, like it, and subscribe. And the publication is saved!

That’s a great story. But it’s not our story.

No, this is the story of a 30 year old travel industry publication that has gone through multiple juggling acts in its time to survive, but came to what everyone agreed was the end with the most recent recession. As its advertisers abandoned ship in a struggling economy, it could no longer pay the printing bill, or the mailing and distribution costs necessary to continue.

“Byways magazine has gone through several transformations in its lifetime,” says editor and publisher Stephen M. Byways ScreenshotKirchner. “We always managed to pull the rabbit out of the hat at the last minute to keep going, but this recession should have been the end.”

The demise of Byways would have been a shame. While other publications focused on the travel destinations of the rich and famous, Byways had built a niche covering the destinations in North America located along the highways and byways of the United States and Canada. Places like Branson and Pigeon Forge, and great American roads like Rt. 66 and the Lincoln Highway, where people drove on vacations, traveled in RVs, rode on motorcycles, or took motorcoach tours.

As the bills mounted, and the advertising disappeared, Kirchner, like so many others in publishing, was desperate.

“We were ready to grasp at any straws,” he says, “and the most logical were the many solicitations we had received for turn-key on-line publishing.” Kirchner decided to give it one last shot, and choose a vendor to put up one turn-key issue and hope for the best.
